Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a nationally recognized program with over 220 registered CERT teams in California alone. CERT was developed in 1985 by the Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) with the belief that civilians needed to be taught basic skills to sustain themselves in any disaster situation as local emergency responders and resources would be overwhelmed during the first 72-hours immediately following a disaster.
In the City of San Pablo, we graduated our first public CERT class in April 2007 and our first Spanish class in October 2008 (only the 2nd graduating Spanish class in Contra Costa County). Members have since assisted in non-emergencies such as distributing disaster education materials, provide services at special events such as our annual Public Safety Day and final drills, and even expressed interest in becoming CERT trainers.
We thank you for you interest in making the City of San Pablo safer and more prepared for any unforeseen event.
