Kids to Camp

In 1992, Officer Trevor Redman proposed a program that would give young people from our community an opportunity to interact with our police officers in a positive non-threatening way. The idea was to identify at-risk youth that could benefit from a unique camping experience with off duty San Pablo Police Officers. With assistance from the City, several volunteer officers chaperoned the first group of twelve campers off to Samuel P. Taylor State Park in Marin County. The program was a great success and has continued almost every year until today.

In 1994 the group camped at Hendy Woods State Park in Mendocino County and additional police employees joined the group in an effort to achieve a ratio of one police officer per every young camper. In 1999 female chaperones were added to the group and young girls were able to become campers. The trips have included water fights, creek crawls, horseback riding, and swimming, not to mention the burnt hot dogs, "s’mores", and an occasional stomach ache. Not one major injury has occurred through the years, and all the young campers have reported that their experiences have been positive and fulfilling.

This program has been supported extensively by the San Pablo Eagles Lodge since its initiation by Officer Redman and his group in 1992. Without their support the continuation of the program would have been impossible.
